Slavic Folklore
We are lurking in the shadows. We punish you if you leave the righteous path. We are the creatures the elders warned you about. If you lose your way in the forest we will snatch you. If you disturb our realms, we will make you pay in blood. If you displease us, we will make your belongings burn away. Mortals are our prey and we love the hunt.
Like all fae, the Dreadful rely on mortals believing in them. In their opinion the best way of creating belief is fear - their ways are those of anxiously whispered tales told by flickering candlelight, the fear of what lurks in the dark, and the stories of a child gone missing by the haunted mill.
The Dreadful are cruel, morbid and vengeful, tricking people into lethal traps and punishing them for entering their realms. Some of them also thrive on offerings given by fearful peasants, bringing misfortune and pain if they deem the sacrifices inadequate.
For the Dreadful, mortals are cattle, toys to play cruel games with, and weak creatures who are there just for their amusement. They are mischievous hags, haunting wraiths, and spirits resembling misfortune, death, and disease.
Due to constant rivalries among the Dreadful, the kin is quite torn and in a neverending struggle for power and leadership. Too many Dreadful think of themselves as the ones destined to lead their Kin, therefore ranks and structures often change. Just as the mortals know to fear them, the Dreadful know not to trust each other - alliances are rare unless there are clear benefits to gain for the Fae involved.
